Entering a New Phase of Medical–Engineering Integration
Director of the Laboratory for Biomaterials and Bioengineering,
Professor Takamitsu Hosoya, PhD
The Laboratory for Biomaterials and Bioengineering (LBB) plays a central role in engineering education and research within the medical and dental sciences division of Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Medical and Dental University), through close collaboration with researchers in medicine, dentistry, and the life sciences. With a focus on manufacturing that contributes to healthcare, LBB is a uniquely positioned research institute that conducts cutting-edge research and fosters human resource development in the fields of biomaterials, biosystems, and medicinal chemistry. Through a wide range of collaborative projects with universities and other institutions, we promote interdisciplinary research and development in materials, devices and systems, and functional molecules, aiming to contribute to industry and society.
All faculty members of LBB belong to the Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, primarily within the Biomedical Science and Engineering Track, and are actively engaged in graduate education. Through education and research supervision in engineering and chemistry, we strive to cultivate highly skilled professionals who will lead advanced research and drive technological innovation.
Under the new environment created by the integration of Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Tokyo Institute of Technology, LBB is entering a new phase in which the fusion of medicine and engineering will be further advanced. In January 2026, our university was also designated as a University for International Research Excellence, and we strongly feel the growing expectations from both domestic and international communities. Moreover, more than two-thirds of our faculty members have joined since FY2021, forming a dynamic research environment filled with fresh ideas and vitality. Taking advantage of these opportunities, we will actively promote cutting-edge research based on medical-engineering collaboration and further strengthen our role as a center of innovation in healthcare-oriented manufacturing. We sincerely appreciate your continued support and cooperation.
